Familiar Puzzle Genres, Fresh Daily Boards

By Zachary Zimmerman · July 20, 2026

People sometimes ask if Daily Grid invented twelve brand-new rule sets from scratch. Mostly no, and that is intentional. The fun part is taking a genre people already half-know (Hashi islands, Flow Free paths, a sliding 8-puzzle) and rebuilding it as a calm daily that fits a phone, resets at midnight PT, and never asks you to guess.

Here is the short map of what each game is spinning off, and what we changed. For the longer origin stories, see the history post.

Bridges from Hashiwokakero

Classic Nikoli Hashi: numbered islands, single or double bridges, one connected network. Bridges keeps that core and tunes boards for a daily sit-down instead of a magazine page. Same counting logic, same "no guessing" bar.

Pathways from Numberlink / Flow Free

Colored pairs, paths that never cross, fill the board. Pathways is that family with Daily Grid's touch targets and daily difficulty curve. If you have cleared a Flow Free level on a phone, you already know the muscle memory.

Bits from Binairo / Takuzu

Balance 0s and 1s, no three in a row, no twin lines. Bits adds the neon equals / differ signs on some boards so a 6x6 daily still has teeth without turning into a slog.

Parcel from Shikaku

One number per rectangle, number equals area. Parcel is Shikaku with our UI and generators. The "aha" when a rectangle finally locks is the same feeling people have had with that genre for decades.

Perimeter from Slitherlink

One closed loop, clue counts on cell sides. Perimeter is our Slitherlink daily: sparse clues, forced edges, no premature loops.

Tiles from the 15 / 8-puzzle

Slide tiles into order around a blank. Tiles is the classic sliding puzzle at daily-friendly size. Old idea, still satisfying when the last two pieces click.

BlindSlide from Rush Hour energy

Sliding blocks that clear a path. BlindSlide keeps the traffic-jam feel but makes you queue the whole plan before it runs. Wrong plan rewinds; you think, then watch.

Conduit from Net / NetWalk

Rotate pipe tiles until power flows. Conduit aims at three exits instead of forcing every pipe into one giant network, so a daily finish feels like a clean circuit, not a wiring chore.

Snake from numbered-path puzzles

Visit numbers in order and fill every cell. Snake sits with Hidato / Numbrix-style path puzzles: spatial planning more than vocabulary.

Polyfit from polyomino packing

Fit odd shapes into a footprint with no gaps. Polyfit is that packing puzzle as a daily: awkward pieces first, notches next, clean close.

Logice from classic logic grids

Clues, yes/no marks, elimination. Logice is the magazine logic-grid habit without a five-letter word list. Closest to Wordle's deduction vibe on the site.

Duet from Star Battle / Two Not Touch

Two markers per region, nothing adjacent (even diagonally). Duet keeps that rule set, adds dark inert cells, and uses gem / X tap cycling with auto-exclusion rings so it reads cleanly on a phone.

Why remix instead of invent from zero?

A good daily needs rules you can learn in under a minute and still enjoy on day 100. Classic genres already passed that test with millions of solvers. Our job is the daily habit layer: one fresh board at midnight PT, logic-only solutions, no ads in the core loop, and twelve flavors so you are not stuck with a single mechanic forever.

If a board feels familiar, that is a feature. The twist is showing up tomorrow with a new one.
